The Time of the White Pines was a period of history in Understory, defined by the transition between the Great Clearing and the Current Era. During this time, growth of white pines signaled that the Forest was reclaiming the cleared land. Although beavers managed to return to the Cattail Marshes, they had shrunk to only a third of their previous size. Wolves, however, never returned to the Forest. Instead, coyotes, migrating in from the West, took their place.
